Standards for Bikeway Design and Construction in Thailand, 2016
Instead of asking, “How did we come to this point?“, we have to tell ourselves and Thai society that “We have already come to this point.” And “We would be going further to other (higher and higher) points“.
We have achieved this success after years of meetings, consulting and discussions with administrators in the Ministry of Transport from Deputy Director Generals to Director Generals, Deputy Minister and Minister.
Finally, the Ministry of Transport issued Standards for Bikeway Design and Construction in Thailand of which the Government Cabinet of Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha passed a resolution to approve them on 19th January 2016 as can be seen below.
A remark here, however, that even if we are delighted with an introduction of these standards, we still have some different opinions on certain figures used in these standards. We wish to use this opportunity to register our recommendation that before concerned government agencies enforce these standards, there should be a number of technical hearings and public hearings which would lead to more recognition and consequently application of these standards would encounter less resistance and receive more cooperation.
Nonetheless, this progress must be considered a giant step in this area, a new page in the history of evolution of cycling system in Thailand.
