CALL FOR PAPER AND ABSTRACT

artwork-ad-tcc-1 Thailand Bike and Walk Forum is an annual symposium on walking and cycling in daily life.  Having been organized by TCC since 2013, it is aimed to stimulate creation of knowledge, and sharing of experiences, on walking and cycling in daily life, especially in the context of Thailand.  Body of knowledge generated from researches and studies related to this forum and TCC’s public policy advocacy work have led to a number of concrete results.

Theme of the 5th forum in 2017 is ‘Walk and Bike Friendly Community’.
To create a walk and bike friendly community or town in Thailand, it is wise to learn widely from not only various parts of the country, but also other countries, as guidelines can be developed from knowledge and experiences in all angles taken from academic researches and studies.

Knowledge and experiences to be presented, shared and discussed in the 2017 Bike and Walk Forum are, however, recommended to fall in one or more of the following six areas: (1) Law and Policy, (2) Systems and Infrastructure, (3) Attitudes and/or Behaviors, (4) Social Return of Investment (SROI) in Promoting Walking and Cycling in Daily Life, (5) Transport and Connections by Walking and Cycling, and (6) Tourism on Foot and by Bicycle.

The forum would be focused on presentation of academic products that can be used in practice in community or town, or are consistent with, or are supportive to creation of walking and cycling friendly community/town.   There would be both oral and poster presentation, special lecture/speech by an expert or person with direct experience concerning walking and cycling, and exhibitions/displays by partners, co-organizing or related organizations.

Thailand Walk and Bike Forum V aims to attract about 200 participants from academics, researchers, university lecturers and students, to representatives from local administrative organizations, government agencies and NGOs,  private sector, sub-project holders, and the mass media.

The fifth Bike and Walk Forum will take place at the 60th Anniversary Chalerm Rajkumaree (Chamjuree 10) Building, Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok on Friday March 3, 2017 from 08.30 to 16.00 hr.  And on Saturday March 4, there would be a one-day guided walk tour to visit abandoned temples and forgotten corners of Bangkok.

Thailand Cycling Club (TCC)’s public policy advocacy so far has already generated some impacts. Interior Ministry’s Local Administration Department required local administrative organizations in every province to promote walking and cycling as a means of transport for short distance.   Transport Ministry’s Department of Rural Roads came up with a handbook on bikeway designs.  Industrial Ministry’s Thai Industrial Standards Institute is developing draft standards, focusing on safety, for bicycles and bicycle parts.  Public Health Ministry’s Department of Health is developing draft indicators for ‘bicycle city’.  These are only some examples.

Moreover, some researches and studies have drawn interests of local and town administrators, and some are good enough to be presented in international forum.  Topics of these researches and studies include, for examples: Strategies for campaigning to motivate personnel of local administrative organizations in the Northeastern Region to use bicycle in their daily life; Soft measures for cycling promotion in the Northeast of Thailand; and Arrangement of traffic system in the Rattanakosin Area of Bangkok.
Some researches and studies have also attracted interest of public media, such as: Social return of investment of skywalks and tunnels.

In addition, there are some researches related to school curriculum, such as training for safe walking and cycling, and those related to persons with disability or elderly people, such as Disabled persons’ behaviors and satisfaction of safety in using walkways in urban community, and Factors affecting elderly people’s uses of walkways in urban areas.

This progress is at least partly a result of advocacy work carried out by TCC with supports from the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, Office of the National Health Commission, and several government agencies.     %e0%b8%a3%e0%b8%b9%e0%b8%9b2
