On January 27-28, 2017, children from Phibun Mangsaharn Wiphak Witthayakorn Kindergarten in Phibun Mangsaharn District Town, Ubon Ratchathani Province, in the Northeastern Region of Thailand used bicycle to go around their hometown to survey existing problems with supports from Phibun Mangsaharn Town Municipality, Phibun Mangsaharn District Police Station, local conservation groups, and Thailand Walking and Cycling Institute (TWCI) / Thailand Cycling Club (TCC).
Idea behind this activity came from Ranong Province in Thailand’s Southern Region where the Federation of Pedestrians and Bicycle Users in the Upper Southern Region and TWCI/TCC worked with Ranong Kindergarten to promote walking to school. The process put children in this school at the centre to learn to know areas around their school and propose what they think should be done to enable them to walk safely and conveniently to school. Their proposed actions would in fact make their town safer and more livable for everyone. Project/activities in Phibun Mangsaharn followed this direction and children there similarly attracted supports from their school, local authorities and activists. They saw that city development must be participatory to gain supports of local people from all groups and walks of life. This project would also help these children to grow up to become responsible citizens of their community, town and country.
Before the cycling survey activity began, the children were also taught traffic rules and hand signals for bicycle users by a traffic policeman from the local police station, so that they could share the road safely with other vehicles.
This activity was a part of the Bike City/Community for Health Project funded by Thai Health Promotion Foundation and run by TWCI/TCC. It was aimed to train children to survey their hometown by walking and cycling, find out problems, analyse them and propose possible solutions with a map. The children have already come up with a Big Cleaning Day Project to tidy up their town with potentially more projects and activities to follow.

“ศุกร์ เสาร์ สร้างสรรค์ เดินปั่นสนั่นเมือง” เป็นกิจกรรมภายใต้โครงการสร้างเมือง-ชุมชนจักรยานเพื่อส่งเสริมวิถีสุขภาวะ ของสสส. และสถาบันการเดินและการจักรยานไทย ชมรมจักรยานเพื่อสุขภาพแห่งประเทศไทย เป็นการฝึกให้เด็กได้ใช้กระบวนการสำรวจ คิด วิเคราะห์ ปัญหา และเสนอแนวทางแก้ไขปัญหา ผ่านการจัดทำแผนที่เดินดินอย่างง่าย โดยการใช้การเดินสำรวจ และจักรยานเป็นเครื่องมือ หลังจากนี้เราก็ต้องมาติดตามกันต่อว่า หลังจากกลุ่มเด็กเดินปั่นสนั่นเมืองเขาได้โครงการ Big Cleaning Day รอบโรงเรียนกันแล้ว การขยับไปไปจัดระเบียบทั้งเมืองจะเกิดขึ้นได้ไหม “เมื่อเด็กขยับ ผู้ใหญ่ใจดีทั้งหลายก็ต้องช่วยสนับสนุนเด็กน้อย แม่นบ่”
